Minnesota State and #15 Bemidji State Kick-Off Weekend with Draw

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State women's soccer team and the 15th-ranked Bemidji State Beavers played to a 2-2 draw in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer match, Friday afternoon at The Pitch.

While the Mavericks (3-2-1, 1-1-1 NSIC) scored first in Friday's affair and held the match's only leads, the Beavers (5-0-1, 2-0-1 NSIC) had a response for each of MSU's goals. Each side scored one goal in the first and second half.

Junior forward Jenny Vetter poked the Mavericks' first goal past the BSU goalkeeper on the break after receiving a long through-ball pass up the middle from sophomore defender Olivia Thoen in the 14th minute.

In the waning minutes of the first half, BSU tied the match 1-1 with a goal from Alexis Larson on an assist from Maria Stocke in the 43rd minute.

The Mavericks reclaimed the lead a second time in the 60th minute when freshman Claire Cater scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from Vetter.

BSU tied the match 12 minutes later, in the 72nd minute, on a goal scored by Erin Becker with an assist from Allyson Smith. Later on, after two scoreless 10-minute halves in overtime, the match ultimately ended in a draw between the Mavericks and Beavers.

In goal for the Mavericks, sophomore Mackenzie Rath was called upon to make seven stops in the match. She faced 24 total BSU shot attempts allowing a pair of goals while on the other end, Edie Frantzen made five stops on 17 shots where she also surrendered two goals.

The Mavericks outnumbered the Beavers in corner kicks, 7-2, and fouls, 18-14, in the match.

The Mavericks are back at home on Sunday to play host to Minnesota Crookston for their Pediatric Cancer and Junior Maverick Day. Fans can also stick around afterwards to get autographs from their favorite Maverick soccer players. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at The Pitch.
