MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State (7-10-1, 7-10-1 WCHA) split a weekend series at St. Cloud State (4-12-1, 4-12-1 WCHA) with a 4-2 win over the Huskies in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action, Saturday.
Junior forward Madison Oelkers was a force with her passing for the Mavericks. The Warroad, Minn., native posted a single-game high in assists with a pair of helpers against the Huskies.
Senior defenseman Tristen Truax scored at the 18:21 mark of the first period 15 seconds into the Mavericks' third power play of the game. After Truax received a feed from Oelkers who got a pass from Brittyn Fleming, she used open ice on the power play to skate deeper into the slot before ripping a shot past SCSU netminder Emma Polusny to make it 1-0.
The Huskies tied the game 1-1 when Laura Kluge launched a one-time shot from the top of the right circle through the legs of MSU's Calla Frank at the 5:34 point of the second period. MSU reclaimed the lead two minutes later at the 7:32 mark when freshman forward Sydney Langseth took a breakaway feed from Oelkers to the net and made a nice move to slide the puck past Polusny for her fourth goal of the season. Sophomore forward Kennedy Bobyck made it 3-1 when she intercepted a pass from Polusny, who was out of the net attempting to clear the puck, and hit the open net 10:21 into the middle period.
In the third period at 6:54, sophomore forward Kelsey King tapped in her team-high eighth goal and 13th point of the season for the Mavericks' second power play goal of the game. Jamie Nelson provided the primary helper on the goal, a back-door pass, that tied her for her team-high sixth assist of the season. Mariah Gardner supplied the secondary assist. Before the game concluded, the Huskies made a push and decreased the deficit to two with a goal at 14:04 by Jenniina Nylund off a rebound shot by Taylor Lind. However, that was all the Huskies could get past Frank as MSU was able to win the second game of the weekend series 4-2 and salvage a split.
The Mavericks didn't hold back on shooting as they put a season-high 46 shots on net in the win. The Huskies finished the game with 29 shots. The special teams battle saw Minnesota State come out on top, going 2-6 with the man advantage, while St. Cloud State failed to score on five power play opportunities.
In net, Frank (6-8-1) stopped 27-of-29 shots to backstop the Mavericks to their seventh win of the season. For the Huskies, Polusny (2-7-0) made 42 saves on 46 shots while coming up short in the contest.
Next weekend, Minnesota State is back at home to play host to Minnesota Duluth at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center for the Mavericks' last home series of the season.
