Minnesota State Women’s Track & Field Selected to Finish First in NSIC Preseason Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. —- The Minnesota State women's track and field team has been picked to finish first in the NSIC Preseason Indoor Track & Field Coaches' Poll.

MSU received 12 first-place votes and 194 points to claim the top spot in the poll, while Augustana followed in second with two first-place votes and 181 points. The University of Mary took third place with one first-place vote and 172 points.

Denisha Cartwright has been named the NSIC's Preseason Track Athlete of the Year, as well as MSU's Track Athlete to Watch. Last season, Cartwright was the NSIC Track Athlete of the Year and the NSIC Newcomer of the Year. She also earned All-American honors in the 60m (6th, 7.57), 200m (7th, 24.67), 60m hurdles (2nd, 8.50) and 4x400 relay (3rd, 3:47.55) at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Katie Taylor was named MSU's Field Athlete to Watch. Last season Taylor won the NCAA Indoor Championship in the weight throw event with a school record throw of 21.17m (69'5.5"). She also claimed All-American honors in the shot put event with a seventh place finish (14.47m/47'5.75").

Minnesota State begins its indoor schedule this weekend with a pair of events. Some Mavericks will compete at the two-day SDSU Holiday Multi in Brookings S.D., beginning Friday. Minnesota State will also host the Chuck Petersen Open at Myers Field House on Saturday.
