Mavericks Stave Off Huskies for Fourth Consecutive Victory and Series Sweep

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State women's hockey team picked up its fourth straight victory in 3-1 fashion during a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game against St. Cloud State played at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Mavericks have won four straight games and worked their way back to a .500 record at 9-9 overall. They now stand 5-9 in WCHA league play. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 6-11-1 with a 2-11-1 record in conference play.

Junior defenseman Taylor Wemple opened the scoring for the Mavericks at the 11:15 mark of the first period. Wemple intercepted a clearing attempt by the Huskies before firing a seeing-eye shot from the point that found the top-left corner of the twine for her first goal of the season to put the Mavericks up 1-0. MSU held the lead through the end of the opening period and carried a 10-9 shots advantage into the first break.

MSU took a 2-0 lead 3:23 into the second period when senior forward Brittyn Fleming ripped a one-time shot on the power play from the right face-off dot past SCSU goaltender Sanni Ahola. The Huskies scored their first and only goal of the afternoon at the 6:46 mark of the middle period. Allie Cornelius cut the deficit in half, 2-1, unassisted after she found a loose puck in front of the Maverick goal after it bounced awkwardly off an MSU defender out from behind the goal. After 40 minutes of action, the Mavericks carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission with a 26-21 advantage in shots on goal.

The third period saw the Mavericks hold on to complete the series sweep of the Huskies. With a tenth of a second remaining in the final period, junior forward Kennedy Bobyck beat the buzzer with an empty-net insurance goal to cap a 3-1 victory.

In goal for the Mavericks, junior goaltender Calla Frank stood tall and made 24 saves en route to recording her fourth consecutive victory. She now owns an 8-7 record between the pipes for MSU this season.

The Mavericks won the shooting battle 33-25 over the Huskies. With the man advantage, MSU scored the only goal with a 1-for-2 showing while the Huskies were unsuccessful in four attempts on the power play.

Up next, the Mavericks head north to take on the Bemidji State Beavers in a two-game WCHA weekend slate, Friday and Saturday. That series will close out MSU's pre-Holiday portion of the schedule.
