The Minnesota State volleyball team (9-7, 4-4 NSIC) defeated the Minnesota-Crookston volleyball team (1-12, 0-8 NSIC) in conference action Friday evening. The Mavericks won in a 3- 0 sweep (25-17, 25-15, 25-12).
In set one, the Mavericks and Golden Eagles traded points back and forth early to a 4-3 Maverick advantage. From there, the Mavericks went on a quick 4-0 run to stretch that lead to 8-3. The Golden Eagles would try a nip away at that lead and got within four but the Mavericks dug in deep and expanded that lead to a 20-12 margin. The Mavericks would not look back as they took five of the final eight points to wrap up set one with a 25-17 victory.
Set two started much the same for both teams as they were neck and neck to a 8-7 score. The Mavericks would once again go on the offensive and rip off another 4-0 run to extend their lead to a 12-7 advantage. The Golden Eagles were no match for the Mavericks as they were not able to mount any offensive presence this evening. The Golden Eagles would only score five more points the rest of the set as the Mavericks showed their horns and dominated set two.
The Mavericks were determined to not let the Golden Eagles soar high in set three. The Mavericks took an early 4-3 advantage before pressing on the gas once again and went on a 5- 0 run rapidly to take a six point lead with a score of 9-3. From there the Golden eagles would get one point back but, again the Maverick offensive power was strong as they put down another 4-0 run to push it to a score of 13-4. From here, it was all Mavericks. They would go on another 4-0 run to extend their lead to 11 with a score of 17-6. The Mavericks would only allow six more points in the set as they coasted to a set three and match victory with a final score of 25-12.
"I am proud of the discipline we showed tonight defensively. We executed at a high level from start to finish." Said Minnesota State head coach Corey Phelps. "The offense was firing on all cylinders and staying smart and aggressive were a big key as well. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into tomorrow and stay focused throughout our match"
The Mavericks were led on the offensive attack by junior Mariah Edgington with 11 kills on the contest. Freshman Brook Bolwerk aided in that effort with 18 assists. Senior Mara Quam had 9 digs in the defensive effort and sophomore Ellie Danielson had 4 blocks in the victory.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow afternoon against Bemidji State at home in Taylor Center with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.
