The Minnesota State volleyball team (10-7, 5-4 NSIC) took on the Bemidji State volleyball team (0-17, 0-9 NSIC) in conference action Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks defeated the Beavers in a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-19, 25-21)
Set one saw the Mavericks and Beavers trade points at a rapid pace. The Mavericks saw the Beavers stay close and worked the score to a 10-10 tie. The Beavers would tie up with the Mavericks two more times in the set before the Mavericks gained some distance with a score of 16-13 after a 3-0 Maverick run. The Mavericks would continue to extend their lead before they went on a 6-0 run to close out set one with a win.
Set two saw the Mavericks fall down 3-1 quickly. The Mavericks would regain their composure and tie it up at four before going on a 3-0 run to retake the lead. The Beavers would answer back with a 3-0 run of their own to tie it again, this time at seven. The Beavers were eager to take set two and took a slight advantage with a score of 11-10. The Mavericks would show their offensive prowess as they powered forward with a 6-0 run to take a five point advantage at 16- 10. The Beavers would not get any closer than three the remainder of the set. The Mavericks would finish set two strong with a 3-0 run and the victory 25-19.
The pesky Beavers were not going to go quietly in set three. The Beavers outpaced the Mavericks to a 12-9 lead about half way through set three. The Mavericks would exert their will in set three and ripped off a 6-0 run to regain the lead 15-12. The Beavers would gnaw back at the Mavericks and take a 17-16 advantage. The Mavericks would once again answer the bell with three consecutive points to take a slight lead late at 19-17. The Mavericks would only give up four more points the rest of the set as they were able to claim victory in set three 25-21 as well as the match.
The Maverick offense today was led by senior Dana Schindler and sophomore Ellie Danielson both who had 8 kills in the contest. The Maverick offensive attack was guided by senior Dana Schindler and freshman Brooke Bolwerk who had 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Defensively, the Mavericks were once again led by senior Mara Quam with 12 digs. Freshman Kiya Durant aided in the defensive effort with 5 blocks.
The Mavericks will return to action next Friday October 15th, as they take on Augustana University at Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn., with first serve set for 6:00 p.m. The Mavericks will complete the home stand as they will take on #6 Wayne State Saturday October 16th, with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.
