SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- #24 Minnesota State extended its winning streak to 10 matches Friday evening as it bested Sioux Falls 2-1 in overtime.
MSU's win marks the 142nd victory for head coach
Brian Bahl at Minnesota State. He is now tied with former head coach Chris Miskec (1996-07) for the most career coaching victories in program history.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 13-2-1 on the season, including an 11-1-1 record in NSIC action. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 3-10-3 on the season, including a 3-7-3 conference record. The Mavericks have also secured home field for the first round of the NSIC Tournament on Wednesday, November 10.
The first half saw a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Mavericks outshot the Cougars 4-0. MSU also boasted a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior
Brynn Desens got the scoring going with her third goal of the season as she found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to put MSU up 1-0. The Mavericks held a 1-0 lead through the majority of the second half but the Cougars were able to knot up the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute as Sarah Miller posted he second goal of the season.
Neither team managed to break the tie in the closing minutes of the second half as the match went into overtime. The Mavericks did not waste any time in their third overtime match this season as junior
Jenny Vetter recorded her 16th goal of the season in the 90th minute to give Minnesota State the 2-1 win.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Rath (8-1-1) picked up the win as she stopped two of the three shots she faced. Alexis Wemhoff (2-7-2) took the loss as she made 10 saves.
In total, MSU outshot the Cougars 12-3. The Mavericks also enjoyed a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Minnesota State wraps up its regular season home schedule on Sunday as it hosts the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
