BISMARCK, N.D. -- No. 25-rated Minnesota State closed out its trip to North Dakota this weekend with a pair of victories, including a second 3-0 win on Sunday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match against the University of Mary.
With another 3-0 win, the Mavericks now have nine consecutive wins, including eight shutouts in their last nine contests, to improve to 12-2-1 and a 10-1-1 NSIC record that has them at second in the conference standings. With the loss, the Marauders drop to 8-4-3, including a 7-3-2 conference record.
In the 31st minute, sophomore forward Tia Martin opened the scoring with a shot that found the lower-left corner from a long way out. Martin scored her second goal of the season off an assist from freshman forward Maille Mathis which gave MSU a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, junior forward Nadia Lowery provided insurance for the Mavericks' lead with a goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Ashlyn Watt. Roughly 10 minutes later, Mathis scored off an assist by Lowery as each Maverick collected their third point of the match in the 64th minute.
In goal, sophomore Mackenzie Rath, now 7-1-1, stood tall to shutout UMary as Minnesota State prevailed 3-0 in the match. She was brilliant, stopping all five of the Marauders' shots on goal for her seventh career clean sheet, which was her sixth of the season. The Mavericks' 10th shutout of the season was the eighth in their last nine matches as they also extended their win streak to nine matches in a row.
In total, MSU edged UM with an 8-7 advantage in shots during the match. However, the Marauders claimed the upper hand in shots on goal by a margin of 5-4. The Mavericks and Marauders tied with five corner kicks, respectively.
Up next, Minnesota State heads to Sioux Falls next Friday to take on the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. before returning home to host Southwest Minnesota State on Senior Day at The Pitch at 1:00 p.m.
