MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State Maverick women's hockey team was blanked 7-0 in the score column during a Western Collegiate Hockey Association conference opener vs. the #5/6 ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, Friday night at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
The Bulldogs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods before piling on three more in the final period for a 7-0 victory over the Mavericks (2-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) during their home opener.
Senior forward Naomi Rogge was a threat offensively all night for the Bulldogs. Rogge hauled in first-star honors with four points in Friday's affair. Rogge scored the game's first goal, and eventual game-winner, 6:30 into the opening period. It marked one of two unassisted goals on Friday night for the Bulldogs.
Earning the win in goal for UMD was senior netminder Emma Soderberg, who is now 1-0 to open the 2021-22 season. Soderberg stopped all 14 shots she faced in Friday's contest.
For MSU, junior goaltender Calla Frank made her second start between the pipes for the Mavericks. Frank stopped 34 of 41 shots in the game while falling to a 1-1 record this season.
Shots went the way of the Bulldogs 41-14 in the WCHA opener for both in-state foes. With eight opportunities on the power play, UMD converted twice. MSU was 0-for-1 with its' one chance on the man advantage.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs rematch in the series finale with a 3:01 p.m. face-off slated for Saturday at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
