MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State men's basketball coach Matt Margenthaler has announced that Harlyn Owens II will join the Maverick men's basketball team in the fall.

All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to Minnesota State and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.  

A guard from Pittsburgh, Pa., Owens joins the Mavericks after playing two seasons with the Dakota County Technical College men's basketball team. As a Blue Knight, Owens averaged 22.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 49.0% from the field during the 2019-20 season. He scored at least 20 points in 11 games, including a season-high 33 points against Bismarck State College. Against Ellsworth CC, he notched a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds.  

"Our backcourt just got faster and more athletic," Margenthaler said. "The speed and tempo Harlyn plays the game at is fun to watch. Combining that with his ability to create off the dribble and his shooting from the perimeter will make him tough to guard."

As a freshman during the 2017-18 season, Owens posted 22.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as he garnered NABC NJCCA Division II All-American Second Team honors. He also garnered NJCCA Region 13 MVP honors as he ranked fourth in the nation in scoring. Against Lake Region State, Owens netted a season-high 40 points, to go along with a season-high 12 rebounds for a double-double. He finished his freshman campaign with shooting 44.9% from the field, to go along with five double-doubles. 

Minnesota State finished its 2019-20 season with a 17-15 record and advanced to the finals of the NSIC Tournament.
