Clermont, Fla. --- Minnesota State extended its win streak to six games on day three of the Spring Games played in Clermont, Fla., Monday afternoon. In game one, MSU defeated Wayne State (Mich.) 3-1, followed by a 3-1 win over the Concord.
With the results, the Mavericks improve to 13-3 on the season while the Warriors fall to 7-3 and the Mountain Lions fall to 7-5-1.
Game 1
Mackenzie Ward started the game but did not factor in the decision despite throwing three scoreless innings.
Katie Bracken (4-1) entered the game in in the fourth inning and earned the win pitching four innings while allowing one run on four hits. Amy Claydon (3-1) started for the Warriors and took the loss pitching six innings and allowing three runs, one of them earned, on ten hits.
After a scoreless three innings to start the game, the Mavericks struck first when
Courtney Potter hit a single into left field that was misplayed, allowing
Kayla Moky and
Hannah Hastings to score. On the next play,
Carly Esselman hit a sac fly that allowed Potter to cross home and improve the Maverick lead to 3-0.
Wayne State scored their first run in the sixth inning with a solo homerun, but that would prove to be the only run they would score as MSU went on to win 3-1.
Hastings,
Moky and
Sydney Nielsen all went 2-3 from the plate while
Esselman recorded the only RBI for the Mavericks.
Game 2
McKayla Armbruster (2-0) started the game for Minnesota State and pitched the complete game allowing one run on six hits while striking out four batters to earn the win. Cartney Schoolcraft (3-2) started for the Mountain Lions and took the loss allowing three runs on nine hits.
The Mavericks opened the game with a leadoff single from
Esselman before
Nielson homered to left field putting MSU up 2-0. Concord got a run back in the bottom of the first when a single brought in a runner from third base.
Armbruster would shut down the Mountain Lions for the remainder of the game, and the Mavericks added a run in the sixth inning on an
Emma Schifferle double that scored
Madi Newman.
Moky and
Hailey Forshee both went 2-3 from the plate while Nielsen went 1-4 with the two-run homer.
Minnesota State will take a day off before returning to action Wednesday afternoon when it will face off with the Lock Haven Bald Eagles with first pitch scheduled at 1:30, before taking on the Pitt Johnstown Mountain Cats at 3:45 p.m.
