Davenport, Fla. --- Minnesota State dropped the extra inning affair 6-5 to Gannon in the first game of the Florida trip.
The Golden Knights were the first on the board in the bottom half of the opening inning by taking a 5-0 lead. After two singles and a walk with one out to load the bases, sophomore first baseman
Ian Hess hit a double down the left field line that cleared the bases. Sophomore designated hitter
Ryan Kalbfus was the next to step to the plate and drove in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning on a home run to left center field.
The Mavericks were able to cut the deficit to one in the top half of the fourth inning by scoring four runs on two hits, two hit by pitches, a walk and an error. Junior catcher
Ben Livorsi drew a one out walk and following senior second baseman
Teddy Petersen and freshman third baseman
Adam Schneider being hit by pitches, Livorsi scored on a wild pitch for the first run. The second run was scored by Petersen after junior right fielder
Jack Waletich hit a sacrifice fly to right field. A single by sophomore shortstop
Nick Altermatt brought Schneider in to score and then Altermatt later scored on a throwing error by the Gannon catcher.
The tying run that eventually forced extra innings was scored in the top of the seventh inning by Minnesota State. Junior
Carter Elliott came in to pinch run for Livorsi, who again drew a one out walk. Petersen hit a loud line drive over the center fielder's head to the fence that was able to bring around Elliott from first base.
The next run was not scored until the bottom of the 10th inning when Gannon hit a walk off single to win the game. Freshman left fielder
Kieran Gagnon singled with one out and ended up on second after a stolen base. Now with two outs, sophomore third baseman
Justin Hamm singled through the left side that plated the winning run.
Altermatt and freshman left fielder
Hunter Ranweiler led the way offensively by collecting multi-hit games. The Mavericks left 17 runners stranded on base in the extra inning game.
Junior right-hander
Cam Kline received a no decision after allowing five runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in an inning of work. Sophomore right-hander
Collin Denk came in for relief and threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. Senior right-hander
Hunter Even (1-1) took the loss in extra innings after pitching three and two-thirds innings and allowing one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out five.
Freshman left-hander
Cory Burroughs also received a no decision after going four innings, giving up four runs (three earned runs) on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Sophomore left-hander
Jacob Visha pitched three innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits and five walks while picking up seven strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander
John Bender came in and struck out all six batters faced in the eighth and ninth innings. Sophomore right-hander
Thomas Boyd (1-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 10th inning after allowing two walks.
Minnesota State (2-3) will turn its attention to Cedarville for tomorrow's match-up that begins at 7:30 p.m. EST in Davenport, Fla.
