Mavericks Complete Comeback Bid over Wayne State (Mich.)

Davenport, Fla. --- Minnesota State came back from a four run deficit to defeat the Wayne State (Mich.) Warriors 13-8 on Wednesday at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

The Warriors wasted no time by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning over the Mavericks. Sophomore center fielder Hunter DeLanoy singled the first pitch of the game up the middle before junior shortstop Jacob Finkbeiner also singled to right field to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout and completing a rundown in between third base and home plate to get two outs, sophomore third baseman Chris Tanderys took a pitch right back up the middle to plate the two runs for the inning.

The Mavericks were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning as sophomore shortstop Nick Altermatt began the inning with a double down the right field line and junior right fielder Cam Kline drove him in on a single through the right side.

Another two runs crossed the plate for WSU in the top of the second inning with sophomore second baseman Noah Miller getting the inning started with a double down the left field line with one out. Junior catcher Ryne Travis brought Miller in on a single up the middle for the first run. Finkbeiner and junior first baseman Michael MacLean also singled to load the bases before Tanderys drew a walk to bring in Travis for the second run.

Minnesota State again responded in the bottom of the second inning with one run. Senior second baseman Teddy Petersen singled to left field to get the inning going and then junior catcher Ben Livorsi hit a double off the wall in right center field to bring Petersen around from first.

The Mavericks pulled within a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 4-3. Petersen again led off with a single, this time to the opposite field and then advanced to third base on junior designated hitter Jack Waletich's single to center field. Freshman third baseman Adam Schneider reached on an error in the nest at bat, bringing in Petersen to score.

The Warriors took their biggest lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning before the Mavericks began the comeback. Sophomore designated hitter Davis Graham walked to start off the inning and sophomore pinch hitter Jacob Badalamenti reached on a bunt single to put two runners on the base paths. After a fielder's choice, Miller hit a three run home run with one out to clear the bases and take the four run lead.

MSU then scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the game up at seven run a piece. Kline got the inning going after reaching on a Warrior error with one out and the bases were loaded when senior center fielder Joey Werner singled to right field and senior first baseman Ty Buck walked. Petersen lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring in Kline before Livorsi hit a ground rule double to plate Werner for the first and second runs. Waletich walked to load the bases back up and then Schneider came through with a two out single to left field that brought in Buck and Livorsi to score.

WSU regained the lead, and scored their final run of the game, in the top of the sixth inning. A one out MacLean walk and a two out single by Graham set up Badalamenti to bring around the go ahead run with a single up the middle.

The Mavericks tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning as Kline reached again by way of an error to begin the inning and Buck brought in Kline with a double to deep right center field.

MSU scored its final five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and would not look back in the win over the Warriors. Altermatt doubled for the second time on the day down the left field line to ignite the offense for the inning. An error helped the Mavericks again as senior left fielder Ty Denzer reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt that Altermatt scored on. Kline brought Denzer in to score on a triple that was hit to the left center field wall and later scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Petersen reached on the fifth error by WSU and Livorsi capped off a big day with his second home run of the season that sailed over the right center field fence for the final two runs of the game.

Livorsi ended the game with two doubles and a home run that drove in four runs for the Mavericks. Altermatt and Kline also finished the day with three hits a piece, while Petersen collected two singles. Schneider and Kline each also drove in two runs on the day.

Sophomore right-hander Kyle Nordby received a no decision after throwing five innings and allowing seven runs on 11 hits and two walks, while striking out six batters. Freshman left-hander Evan Shaw (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win after pitching four innings in relief and giving up one run on three hits and a walk, while punching out four.

Senior right-hander Dillion McIerney did not factor in the decision after going four innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts. Senior right-hander Richard Hovde pitched two-thirds of an inning and was hit with four unearned runs on three hits and three walks. Senior left-hander Matt Krutsch (0-1) was hit with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Jacob Raymond pitched one inning of relief and was also hit with four unearned runs on two hits, while striking out one. Senior right-hander Josh Nelson was the only Warrior not to give up a run after pitching a clean eighth inning with two hits and a strikeout.

Minnesota State (8-4) will its Florida trip with its second match-up against #6 Ashland in Davenport, Fla., at 9:00 a.m. EST.
