Davenport, Fla. --- Minnesota State concluded its Florida trip with a 13-0 loss to the No. 6 Ashland Eagles on Thursday at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. The Mavericks finished the trip with a 6-3 record in nine games.
Ashland scored its first runs of the game in the top of the second inning as three Eagles crossed the plate. Senior third baseman G
arett Robberts doubled to right field to open the inning and later scored on the one out single through the left side by junior catcher
Logan Stoldt. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior second baseman
Logan Moss was hit by a pitch that brought in Stoldt to score. A walk by senior designated hitter
Carson Mittermaier brought in the final run of the inning as junior center fielder
Vince Vanata crossed the plate.
The next four runs for the Eagles came in the top of the fourth inning to push their lead to 7-0. With one away, Robberts hit his second double of the game that brought around Moss to score. A senior right fielder
Michael Rogers double to right field brought in two runs in the next at bat as Robberts and Mittermaier scored. A sacrifice fly by junior left fielder
Alex Whipple brought in Rogers for the fourth run of the inning.
Ashland did not score again until the top of the ninth inning, bringing in the last six runs of the game. Vanata lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field that allowed Rogers to score and then a single by junior shortstop
Austin Eifried plated Stoldt for the second run of the inning. The second sacrifice of the inning, this time by Moss, brought in the third run. With two outs and the count reading 3-2, junior first baseman
Micah Allen launched a three run home run to deep center field that scored the final three runs of the game.
Junior right-hander
Brendan Knoll (0-1) took his first loss of the season after pitching three innings are allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Junior right-hander
Trevor Divinski gave up four runs in his one inning of work on four hits and two walks, while collecting one strikeout. Sophomore right-hander
Jack Brown was one out away from pitching the final five innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks with all six runs coming in the final frame. Senior infielder
Tory Miller came in to get the final out of the ninth inning, getting a flyout on one pitch.
Senior right-hander
Chance Hitchcock (3-0) threw seven scoreless frames of baseball, allowing six hits and striking out nine batters. Freshman right-hander
Jake Depperschmidt pitched the final two scoreless innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
Minnesota State (8-5) will begin conference play with a four game set against Bemidji State on March 15-14 in Mankato, Minn. The two doubleheaders will begin at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday with the first three games counted towards the conference record and the fourth one will be a nonconference game.
