Melbourne, Fla. --- Minnesota State sees it win streak end at five games after not being able to complete the comeback against Florida Tech, dropping the contest 4-3 at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning after scoring a pair of runs. Senior second baseman
Rodnie Bernard singled on the first pitch of the inning and senior shortstop
Raul Quintero walked to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt to move over the runners and a walk to load the bases, senior designated hitter
Blaise Maris hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Bernard. Quintero then came in for the second run when junior center fielder
Jakob Newton singled to left field.
Florida Tech put up another two spot in the bottom of the fourth inning to expand the lead to four runs. The first two Panthers reached base again as Newton walked and junior left fielder
Tyler Brown singled to right field. The runners were moved up on a sacrifice bunt and then an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman
Alec Eldridge brought in Newton, while Brown scored on a wild pitch.
The Mavericks scored all three of their runs in the next half inning to cut into the deficit. Senior second baseman
Tory Miller lead of the inning with a bloop single behind the shortstop and sophomore catcher
Mikey Fredrickson followed with a double of the left field wall to put runners on second and third. With one out, freshman left fielder
Hunter Ranweiler hit an infield single in the hole between shortstop and third to bring in Miller and junior right fielder
Cam Kline tripled deep in the left field gap to score Fredrickson and Ranweiler. The Mavericks had the bases loaded with two outs, but were not able to bring the tying run in and left a total of 11 runners on base throughout the game.
Ranweiler paced Minnesota State offensively by going three-for-four at the plate and collecting an RBI, while Kline also had a multi-hit game and drove in two runs.
Senior right-hander
Jon Ludwig (0-1) took his first loss of the season after going six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Junior right-hander
Trevor Divinski pitched the final inning and a third, surrendering one hit and striking out one.
Sophomore right-hander
Justin Lorenz did not factor in the decision after going four and a third innings and giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander
Andrew Dunham, junior right-hander
Andres Rodriguez (1-1), senior right-hander
Justin Lane and senior right-hander
Blake Beyel combined to pitch the next four and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing three hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Rodriguez picked up the win after pitching the fifth and sixth innings, while Beyel completed his first save of the season.
Minnesota State (7-4) will continue its play down in Florida with match-up against Wayne State (Mich.) in Davenport, Fla., at 3:30 p.m. EST.
