Houghton, Mich. --- #6 Minnesota State received a stellar goaltending performance from
Dryden McKay and a pair of players scored their first goals while wearing the Purple and Gold as the Mavericks skated to a 2-0 road win at Michigan Tech Monday.
The visiting Mavericks, who had dropped a 3-1 decision to the Huskies Sunday, outshot Tech by a 16-8 margin in the first period, but it wasn't until midway through the second period before they were able to put the puck into the net.
Senior center
Jake Jaremko's nifty goal-mouth pass found the stick of linemate
Todd Burgess and the veteran winger made no mistake in getting his first goal in a Maverick uniform. The goal came while the Mavericks were and a power play and the assist by Jaremko is his fourth in three games. Linemate
Reggie Lutz had the secondary assist on the goal and has now recorded four points on a pair of goals and two assists through the first three games of the season.
Sophomore forward
Cade Borchardt, playing in his 13th career game, picked up his first career goal at the 17:40 mark of the second period on a tap in from in front of the net after taking a nice pass from
Nathan Smith. Junior defenseman
Andy Carroll also was credited with an assist on the play.
The two teams battled through a scoreless third period and the Mavericks ended up outshooting the Huskies by a 37-19 margin in the game.
McKay was flawless in getting the win, turning aside 19 shots in earning his 16th career shutout and his second in three games this year. His 16 shutouts, which stand as a school record, are tied for ninth all-time in NCAA DI men's hockey history.
The Mavericks finished the game going one-for-six in power play chances, while Michigan Tech was zero-for-five with the man advantage.
Minnesota State (2-1-0 overall) returns home to face Milwaukee School of Engineering this Saturday and Sunday in a pair of nonconference games.
