MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team and Bemidji State Beavers played a tight defensive game that ended in a 2-2 tie, Thursday.

Minnesota State (1-5-1, 1-5-0-1 WCHA) fell short of earning extra point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings after losing 1-0 in the shootout to Bemidji State (1-1-1, 1-1-1-0 WCHA).

The Beavers struck first when senior winger Paige Beebe beat Maverick goaltender Calla Frank on her glove side 6:40 into the opening period. BSU held to 1-0 advantage after the first period.

In the second period, MSU tied the game with senior forward Brittyn Fleming starting things by walking out of the corner. And after a cross-crease feed from Brooke Bryant finishing the play by jamming the puck into the net at the 9:26 for her second goal of the season. BSU reclaimed the lead at 16:15 of the middle period when junior forward Ellie Moser scored off a rebound from a blocked shot in the slot. Graysen Myers was credited with the lone assist after putting on the initial shot. At 18:13 of the second period, MSU tied the game a second time. Freshman forward Jamie Nelson scored her third goal of the season with a shot from the slot that was unassisted following a BSU turnover.

After a scoreless third period, in which the Mavericks outshot the Beavers 12-6, neither team was able to score in the three-on-three overtime. BSU claimed the extra point in league play by winning the shootout 1-0.

MSU owned a 29-17 advantage in the shots department for the game.

Frank (1-4-1 on the year) made 15 saves on 17 shots while Dowhy stopped 25-of-27 shots in Thursday's game. 

Both sides failed to put the puck in the net on two power play opportunities.

Tomorrow, the Mavericks and Beavers are slated to play again with a 2:07 p.m. face-off at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

Minnesota State head coach John Harrington commented following Thursday's game.
