ST. CLOUD, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey remains winless after falling to St. Cloud State, 1-0, Friday night.
It was a goaltending duel between the Mavericks (0-3-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) and Huskies (1-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) to start the weekend series. Playing in her first collegiate game, Huskies' freshman goaltender Sanni Ahola recorded her first career shutout with a 36-save showing.
After an uneventful first period, Huskies junior forward Allie Cornelius broke the scoreless tie 2:51 into the middle period. Cornelius put a shot on from the high slot that hit Maverick netminder Calla Frank's trapper before bouncing up and over her to coast into the net.
In the third, the Mavericks continued their offensive-zone pressure while outshooting the Huskies 10-2 but failed to find the back of the net. Ahola and the Huskies held on until the end to get the win to open their season.
Frank (0-3-0) faced 12 shots and stopped 11 while opposing goaltender Ahola (1-0-0) stopped all 36 shots she saw to record her first shutout in her first collegiate game.
Minnesota State put a season-high 36 shots on net to St. Cloud State's 12 shots in the contest. MSU failed to score on four power play opportunities, while SCSU followed suit on three chances with the man advantage.
The Mavericks take on St. Cloud State again tomorrow afternoon with a 3:07 p.m. face-off at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
