ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team opened its season Friday evening with a 6-1 win over Northwestern College (Iowa) in St. Peter.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Raiders drop to 1-1.
NWC began the dual winning all three of the doubles matches to go up 1-0 early. The duo of senior
Monika Ryan and junior
Tyanna Washa fell to Zoe Holscher and Jacque Ingram 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, while sophomores
Kjerstin Hall and
Sarah Johansen dropped a 6-4 decision to Jessica Wilson and Abby Petrick in the No. 3 doubles match.
Minnesota State then swept all six of the singles matches to claim the 6-1 dual victory.
Ryan claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Annika Spirgath in the No. 1 singles match, while freshman
Dee Dokken recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ingram in the No. 2 singles match. Washa bested Holscher 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles match, while sophomore
Lauren Goth notched a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Emma Van Drie in the No. 4 singles match.
Hall posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wilson in the No. 5 singles match also, while Johansen notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Emilee Hulsing in the No. 6 singles match.
Minnesota State opens NSIC competition on Saturday, Feb. 8, as it takes on MSU Moorhead in Fargo, N.D. The dual is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
