Mavericks Travel to MSU Moorhead and Northern State this Weekend

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team will continue its season on the road as it takes on MSU Moorhead on Friday, at 7:30 p.m., and Northern State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Minnesota State History: The 2019-20 season marks the 98th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,365-910 (.600) in 2,275 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 178-74 (.706) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

The Mavericks made their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns an 18-15 record (.545) in NCAA Tournament play, including a 91-62 loss to Northwest Missouri State in 2019.

Against the Dragons: Friday's game between Minnesota State and MSU Moorhead will be their 98th all-time meeting, with the Mavericks leading the all-time series 65-32. The Mavericks have won their last seven games against the Dragons, including an 88-87 victory at home last season.

Senior Cameron Kirksey recorded a career-high 43 points against the Dragons last season, to go along with eight rebounds. Senior Kevin Krieger also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 14-5 record against MSU Moorhead, including a 4-3 record at home.

Against the Wolves: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Northern State marks their 28th all-time meeting with the Mavericks leading the series 16-11. The Wolves have won their last meetings, including an 88-80 win at Taylor Center last season.

Senior Cameron Kirksey recorded 25 points and six rebounds against the Wolves last season, while senior Kevin Krieger notched 14 points and seven rebounds.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 9-8 record against Northern State, including a 3-3 record at home.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the weekend the owner of an 11-9 record, including a 9-5 NSIC record. MSU has won eight of its last 10 contests. Last weekend MSU fell to Wayne State 73-71, before besting Augustana 89-77 at Taylor Center.

As a team, MSU has averaged 77.6 points and 39.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 45.7% from the field. The Mavericks have passed out 273 assists and have recorded 104 blocks.

Five Mavericks are averaging more than nine points per game this season, including senior Cameron Kirksey who is posting a team-leading 17.7 points a game. Freshman Ryland Holt has posted 14.0 points per game also, while senior Kevin Krieger has tallied 11.8 points a game. Sophomore Kelby Kramer is averaging 9.2 points and a team-best 9.6 rebounds a game as well, while freshman Corvon Seales has notched 9.9 points and a team-best 3.2 assists a game.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 19th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 404-174 (.698).
    
Concerning the Dragons: MSU Moorhead enters the weekend the owner of a 12-8 record, including an 8-6 NSIC record. Last weekend, the Dragons fell to Minnesota Duluth 77-70, before besting St. Cloud State 80-78.

As a team, MSUM is averaging 77.7 points and 36.8 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 48.6% from the field, including a 33.9% showing from three point range. The Dragons have notched 127 steals and 236 assists also.

Gavin Baumgartner leads the Dragons with 16.3 points per game and 37 three pointers made this season. Bryce Irsfeld has tallied 12.9 points per game and 33 three point field goals also. Dane Zimmer has notched 8.1 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game also, while Johnny Beeninga has passed out a team-leading 64 assists

MSU Moorhead is coached by Chad Walthall who is in his 10th season with the Dragons. He owns a 214-105 record.

Concerning the Wolves: Northern State enters the weekend the owner of a 15-5 record, including an 11-3 NSIC record. Last weekend, the Wolves defeated St. Cloud State 88-71, before falling to the Minnesota Duluth 87-79. 

As a team, NSU has averaged 81.0 points and 35.5 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 49.4% from the field and 36.6% from downtown. The Wolves have also passed out 314 assists and have tallied 112 steals.

Parker Fox leads the Wolves with 21.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season, while Mason Stark has tallied 15.1 points per game and a team-best 37 three pointers. Andrew Kallman has tallied 8.3 points and has passed out a team-leading 72 assists. 

Northern State is coached by Saul Phillips who is in his first season as head coach of the Wolves.
