Mavericks Tie Beavers 1-1, Earn Extra Conference Point

Bemidji, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team tied the Bemidji State Beavers 1-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at Sanford Center. The Mavericks picked up the extra conference point by scoring in the 3-on-3 overtime period.

An early goal at the 1:44 mark in the first period gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead that held until the first intermission. Junior winger Paige Beebe received a tap back pass by junior linemate Lindsey Featherstone just below the left face-off circle and went top shelf on sophomore netminder Abigail Levy.

The second period and most of the third period went scoreless before the Mavericks were able to tie the game up and force overtime. At the 18:14 mark, senior captain Emily Antony scored her third goal of the season on the power play. Antony banged the puck off junior netminder Lauren Bench's leg from below the red line for the goal with sophomore blueliner Anna Wilgren and freshman winger Kelsey King collecting the assists.

The overtime period went scoreless as the game went down as a tie in the standings. This was the fifth 3-on-3 overtime period that Minnesota State has played in this season. King scored in the extra period for the second time this season to give the Mavericks the extra conference point as she put away the puck as it was sitting behind Bench in the crease. MSU has now earned the extra conference point in all three instances this season in WCHA play.

Sophomore Abigail Levy (5-8-2) collected her second consecutive win by stopping 30-of-31 shots through regulation and the first overtime.

The Mavericks were outshot by the Beavers by a 31-27 margin. Minnesota State scored on the only power play opportunity of the game, while Bemidji State failed to score on its lone man advantage opportunity.

Now standing with a 8-13-5 (3-11-3-3 WCHA) record, the Mavericks and Beavers will clash in game two tomorrow at 3:07 p.m.
