Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State saw its nine-game winning streak come to end Saturday with the Mavericks dropping a 3-2 decision to visiting Winona State.
The Warriors got the scoring started in the second frame when
Nick Nalewanski drove a two bagger down the left field line to bring in sophomore
Austin Savary. The next run came in the same fashion, but it was a single from freshman
Kyle Kosobucki to knock Savary in from second and the score stood 2-0 in favor of Winona State after two innings of action.
The Mavericks responded in the fifth inning after sophomore designated hitter
Cam Kline roped a stand-up triple to right centerfield and
Jack Waletich, a sophomore centerfielder, drove in him in on a ground-out RBI.
Then, in the top of the sixth inning, on a Savary single to center, junior
Derek Martin scored to move the Warriors' lead back to two. And after six innings of play, Winona State held a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks started to mount a comeback with some small ball in the ninth. Freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt singled to left center to start the inning and senior outfielder
Jordan Hart followed with a bunt single. Junior first baseman
Ty Buck launched a warning track fly ball to centerfield, which ended up being deep enough to score Altermatt from second to make it a 3-2 deficit. Two fly balls put an end to the come from behind effort, giving the Warriors the 3-2 win.
Mitch Frederick led the Maverick bats, going 2-3 with a double.
Sophomore right-handed starter
Trevor Divinski (4-1) took the loss, going two innings and giving up two runs on three hits. Junior right-hander
Hunter Even came on in relief for the next four innings. He would only allow a run and a hit while striking out seven batters. Freshman righty
Collin Denk took over on the bump in the seventh and went the entire inning and recorded a strikeout. Senior
Bobby Gauvreau tossed the final two innings during which e surrendered one hit and struck out three batters.
Nicholas Herold, a sophomore right-handed pitcher hrew three innings (one run and two hits with three strikeouts) of relief to pick up the win for Winona State. Freshman right-hander
Justin Firpo threw the final four innings and earned the save by limiting the Mavericks to one run, three hits and recorded four strikeouts along the way.
Npw 38-11 on the year, Minnesota State will get set for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament that begins May 8 and goes through May 11 in St. Cloud, Minn. Tournament schedule and seeding has yet to be announced.
