Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State extended its winning streak to nine games with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate baseball victories over Winona State at Bowyer Field Friday afternoon.
Minnesota State (38-10, 28-7 NSIC) got it done against Winona State (23-21, 15-16 NSIC) with great pitching, only allowing one run in each of the games, prevailing over the visiting Warriors by the scores of 3-1 and 11-1.
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 3, Winona State 1
Sophomore righthanded pitcher
Cam Kline dealt a dominating seven-inning complete-game win in the first contest in leading the Mavericks to a 3-1 victory.
In the fourth inning, the Mavericks go their bats going with two runs on three hits. It started with
Ty Buck doubling to center field to score
Nick Altermatt.
Teddy Petersen followed the RBI with one of his own on the single that scored Buck. The score stood 2-0 at the end of the fourth inning.
The bottom of the sixth inning saw Petersen continue the scoring for the Mavericks when he laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to score Altermatt after a throwing error. It upped the Maverick lead to 3-0 as the game went into the seventh inning.
The Warriors got on the board in the seventh with a solo homerun to right field off the bat of
Tanner Williams. However, that would be all for the Warriors as the Mavericks held on for the 3-1 win.
Altermatt led the Mavericks offensively, going 2-3 with two runs scored. Petersen also went 2-3 with two RBI.
Kline went the distance, only allowing three hits and a run with 11 strikeouts in upping his record to 9-1 for the year.
Freshman right-hander
Kyle Gendron (2-3) took the loss for WSU after pitching all six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits.
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 11, Winona State 1
The Mavericks completed the sweep in game two with solid pitching and explosive offense.
Minnesota State started early in game two with bunt single from leadoff hitter Tom Imholte and after a throwing error, senior
Jordan Hart moved Imholte to second. Petersen cleared the bases with two-run double. Kline then knocked him in with a single to extend the lead to 3-0.
The scoring continued for the Mavericks in the next inning. Imholte singled up the middle to bring in sophomore
Mitch Frederick.
It became a 5-0 Minnesota State lead in the third inning with an unearned run and the lead increased to 6-0 in the fifth when Hart blasted a solo shot for his 18th homerun of the season. The round tripper tied the single-season school record (Kevin Dixon had 18 home runs in 2005). The scoring in the bottom half didn't end there. With the bases loaded junior switch-hitter
Ty Denzer roped a double to center field to clear the bases for three RBI. Altermatt's RBI single to scored Denzer and the Mavericks held a 10-0 lead after six innings.
The Warriors got their first run in the seventh with a solo homerun off the bat of junior
Andrew Pliner.
The Mavericks claimed the win in the eighth when they forced the 10-run rule with a single up the middle from sophomore left-handed batter

Sophomore right-hander
Jimmy Larson (6-3) pitched all seven innings and gave up three hits and a run for the Mavericks He struck out five batters and walked one. Junior right-hander
Jack Rasmussen came in for relief work in the eighth and allowed only one hit.
Senior right-hander
Brett Herber (2-2) was handed the loss after going five innings and allowing 10 runs and 13 hits. Junior right-hander
Tanner Haessly came in for relief in the sixth and went 2.1 innings, giving up a run and five hits.
Minnesota State, which has gone 20-2 in its last 22 games, closes out the regular season Saturday with a single game vs. Winona State with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Bowyer Field.
