Mavericks Take the First Two over the Marauders on Saturday

Bismarck, N.D.. — Minnesota State takes the first two games of the three game set against U-Mary. The Mavericks won both games by a score of 6-0 and 11-2.
 
Minnesota State (21-8, 12-5 NSIC) swept the doubleheader, while only allowing two runs in the 16 innings.
 
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 6, U-Mary 0
 
Sophomore starter Cam Kline pitched his second consecutive complete game shutout to improve to 6-0, leading the NSIC in wins, in the game one win.

Minnesota State scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead before U-Mary could come to the plate. Senior catcher Tom Imholte led off the game with a single on the first pitch of the game. Freshman shortstop Nick Altermatt doubled, moving Imholte up to third base. Senior right fielder Jordan Hart then brought then brought both runners in on a single to left center and moved up to second on the throw. Hart advanced to third on a groundout before junior second baseman Teddy Petersen singled to plate Hart for the final run of the inning.
 
The Mavericks extended their lead in the top of the third inning as junior designated hitter Ty Buck led off the inning with a single. Junior left fielder Ty Denzer doubled to right field to bring in Buck for the fourth run of the game.
 
Minnesota State added another run in the top of the fifth inning. A walk by Hart, then singles by Petersen and sophomore first baseman Carter Elliott loaded the bases with one out. Denzer earned his second RBI of the game as he was hit by a pitch to bring home Hart.
 
The Mavericks scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Buck and Petersen hit back-to-back doubles with one out as sophomore Hunter Frericks, a pinch runner for Buck, scored the run.
 
Petersen led the way offensively by going three-for-four with two RBI with Hart and Denzer also adding two RBI.
 
Kline (6-0) earned the win and remained perfect on the year. In Kline's second consecutive complete game shutout, he allowed five hits and a walk, while striking out eight in the seven innings.

Junior right-hander Parker McRae (2-3) took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing five runs on 11 hits and a walk, while only striking out one. Senior right-hander Ian Fisher came on in relief to pitch the final two innings. Fisher allowed one run on two hits in his outing.

GAME 2 – Minnesota State 11, U-Mary 2
 
The Mavericks completed the sweep of the doubleheader over the Marauders by scoring 11 runs on 14 hits.
 
Minnesota State jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back walks by Buck and Petersen walked to start the inning. After pitching in game one, Kline was the designated hitter in game two and hit an RBI double to left field. Sophomore third baseman Mitch Frederick then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Petersen from third.
 
Three more runs scored for the Mavericks scored in the top of the third inning. Imholte began the inning with a single and Altermatt laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second. Hart added another RBI to his day on a single to left field. In the next at bat, Buck smashed his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to make the score 5-0. 

The Marauders scored their first run of the day on a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman right fielder Jaxon Kostka cleared the left field fence to cut into the MSU lead.
 
Minnesota State got the run back and added another in the top of the fourth inning to make to score 7-1. Imholte got the inning rolling with one out with a single and then stealing second base. Altermatt then hit an infield single and advanced to third base on an error as Imholte scored on the play. Hart singled again to center field to bring in Altermatt from third.
 
The Mavericks hit two two-run home runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 10 over U-Mary. Senior center fielder Tyler Berg opened the inning with a single and Altermatt followed with his second home run of the season down the left field line. Hart drew a walk in the next at bat, while Buck hit his second home run of the day and fifth of the season to left center field.
 
U-Mary cut the lead to nine as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice scored the run as the Mavericks the turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
 
Buck lead the way for the Mavericks with two home runs, three runs scored, four RBI and a walk. Altermatt and Hart also had two RBI each.

Sophomore right-hander Trevor Divinski (3-0) pitched six innings in the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five. Junior right-hander Hunter Even came in and earned the three inning save, while striking out six of the 10 batters faced.
 
Sophomore right-hander Andrew Brooks (1-2) started for the Marauders and gave up seven runs (six earned runs) on eight hits and three walks in four innings of work. Freshman right-hander Quinten Evers recorded one and a third innings giving up four runs on four hits and a walk. Freshman right-hander Daniel Turner pitched the final two and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
 
Minnesota State and U-Mary will finish the three-game series tomorrow beginning at noon.
