Mavericks Complete Series Sweep over Upper Iowa on Sunday

Fayette, Iowa --- Minnesota State took both games in the doubleheader Sunday against Upper Iowa by the scores of 7-1 and 10-3.
 
Minnesota State (27-8, 18-5 NSIC) extended its winning streak to nine games and completed the three-game series sweep over Upper Iowa.
 
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 7, Upper Iowa 1
 
Sophomore right-hander Jimmy Larson tossed six scoreless innings in his fifth win of the season as the Mavericks defeated the Peacocks 7-1 in first game of the doubleheader.

Minnesota State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when junior designated hitter Ty Buck singled and freshman shortstop Nick Altermatt scored all the way from first base after he also singled earlier in the inning.
 
The Mavericks added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning with sophomore third baseman Mitch Frederick and sophomore first baseman Carter Elliott opening the inning with a walk and a single. After sophomore center fielder Jack Waletich laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, senior catcher Tom Imholte brought in a run on a single to left field. Imholte then promptly stole second before Altermatt grounded out to bring in Elliott for the third run of the game.
 
Minnesota State extended its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs. Waletich started the two-out rally with a double and then Imholte singled to put runners on first and third. An error on the Peacocks' pitcher allowed Waletich to score and Imholte to advance to third. Altermatt then collected his second RBI of the game on a single to make the score 5-0.
 
The Mavericks picked up another two-out run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Petersen was hit by a pitch, then stole second and moved up to third on an error by the second baseman. Sophomore left fielder Cam Kline came through with a two-out RBI single to left center field.
 
An error by the Peacocks, a single by Elliott and Waletich being hit by a pitch allowed the Mavericks to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Imholte was able to bring one run in on a sacrifice fly to right field for the seventh run of the game.
 
Upper Iowa finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning with its only run of the game. An error by the Mavericks allowed junior left fielder Hogan Penny to reach and the sophomore first baseman A.J. Friedrich brought him in on a double.
 
Imholte and Altermatt had two hits, two RBI and a run scored in the game each with Elliott also collecting two hits.
 
Larson (5-3) pitched six strong scoreless innings in the win, giving up five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Zach Gustafson pitched the final inning, allowing one unearned run on a hit and a walk.
 
Freshman right-hander Evan Rice (0-3) lasted five innings in the loss and allowed seven runs on 10 hits and a walk. Junior right-hander Clayton Lieb pitched an inning in relief and did not give up a run in the three batters faced.
 
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 10, Upper Iowa 3
 
The Mavericks' winning streak extended to nine games as MSU completed the doubleheader and series sweep over the Peacocks.
 
It was the Peacocks who took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning over the Mavericks. Senior right fielder Tony Salato led off the game with a single and eventually advanced to third base, while the Mavericks got two outs. Friedrich brought in his second run of the day to give UIU the lead.
 
Upper Iowa extended its lead in the top of the third inning to 2-0. With the bases loaded and one out, Penny reached on a fielder's choice as senior center fielder Zackary Cain was able to score the run.
 
The Mavericks pulled even in the bottom of the third inning with two more runs scoring with two outs. Altermatt was hit by a pitch to extend the inning and then senior right fielder Jordan Hart blasted his 15th home run of the season over the right field fence.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Minnesota State took the 5-2 lead by scoring three runs. Waletich doubled and Imholte singled to open the inning. The Mavericks attempted a double steal, but the Peacocks threw out Imholte trying to steal second base as Waletich stole third. Altermatt brought in the go-ahead run with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a ground out. Buck scored Altermatt with a double down the right field line to make the score 4-2. The final run of the inning scored via an error by the Peacocks as Petersen reached and Buck scored.
 
The Mavericks broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs to take an eight run advantage. Three consecutive singles by Frederick, Elliott and Waletich loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Imholte then hit a line drive to center field that ended up being a sacrifice fly to bring in Frederick from third. After a fly out, the Peacocks decided to intentionally walk Hart to set up a matchup with Buck. With the bases loaded and two outs, Buck came through in a big way with a bases clearing double to left center field. Petersen and Kline both walked to load the bases again for MSU, then Frederick came to bat again in the inning and was hit by a pitch to bring in the 10th run of the game.
 
Upper Iowa scored a run in the top of the eighth inning with the help of three singles and a walk. Senior catcher Cole Scieszinski brought in the run on an infield single on the left side.
 
Buck led the way in game two by going three-for-five with four RBI and two runs scored. Waletich finished a perfect three-for three with two runs scored and a stolen base. Imholte and Hart also contributed with multi-hit games.
 
Sophomore right-hander Trevor Divinski started on the mound for the Mavericks and went three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two. Junior right-hander Jon Ludwig (3-0) earned the win after working four scoreless innings in relief and struck out two batters, while only giving up two hits. Freshman right-hander Kyle Nordby pitched an inning and allowed a run on three hits and a walk. Freshman right-hander Jack Brown pitched a scoreless final inning and faced the minimum with the help of a game ending double play.
 
Freshman right-hander Logan Dewulf (1-1) took the loss after going five innings, while giving up five runs (four earned runs) on nine hits and striking out one. Junior left-hander Mac Wolfe lasted two-thirds of an inning in relief and allowed five runs on four hits and two walks. Junior right-hander Greg Glass came in and walked the only batter he faced. Junior right-hander Chris Harsh got the final out of the sixth inning via a strike out. Senior right-hander Jeremy Maschino pitched a scoreless seventh inning and struck out one. Junior right-hander Jack Tully worked the final scoreless inning and gave up a hit and struck out one.
 
Minnesota State will host Wayne State in a three-game weekend series on Friday and Saturday in Mankato, Minn., at Bowyer Field. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday at 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m., with a single game following on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
