#3 Mavericks Fall to #11 Friars at East Regional

Providence, R.I.  ---  #3 Minnesota State took a three-goal lead to start the game, but could not hold off #11 Providence in falling to the Friars 6-3 in a NCAA East Region semi-final game Saturday in Providence, R.I.

After freshman defenseman Wyatt Aamodt dislodged the puck from a Providence player in Minnesota State's defensive zone, junior forward Marc Michaelis found linemate Parker Tuomie in the slot. Tuomie's shot was stopped by PC netminder Hayden Hawkey, but Charlie Gerard pounced on the rebound to open the scoring with his 12th goal of the year.  Less than a minute later, center Jake Jaremko took a nice feed from Reggie Lutz and beat Hawkey on the stickside for his seventh goal of the year.  Nick Rivera made it a 3-0 Minnesota State lead at 11:08.  Providence cut into the lead with a power play goal by Josh Wilkins at 13:12 and after the first period of action, the Mavericks headed into the locker room owning a 3-1 lead.

The Friars mounted their comeback, scoring twice in the second frame to knot the score at 3-3. Mimal Sukumaran with his sixth goal of the year at 4:37 made it 3-2 and Kasper Bjorkquist's power play goal tied it at 9:33.

A trio of unanswered tallies by Providence in the final 20 minutes of play sealed Minnesota State's fate. The Friars capitalized on a five-minute power play opportunity to take control of the contest with power play goals by Tyce Thompson at 8:37 and Wilkins at 9:55 making it 5-3.  An empty-netter from Jason O'Neill at 17:50 closed out the scoring in the game.

Dryden McKay finished with 23 saves in the contest and ends an outstanding freshman season with a 24-7-2 record.  Minnesota State finished the game with a zero-for-three ledger in power play chances.  The Mavericks, which entered the contest having allowed one power play goal in the previous eight games, allowed four power play goals to Providence.

Minnesota State completes the 2018-19 campaign with a 32-8-2 record.
