WINONA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team earned its first NSIC victory of the season Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minn., as it bested the Upper Iowa Peacocks 5-2.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 2-3 on the season, including a 1-1 conference record. With the loss, the Peacocks fall to 1-1 on the season, including a 0-1 NSIC record.
Upper Iowa scored the first point in the dual as it won two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Valerie Bresnahan and sophomore
Abby Smith posted the lone win for MSU in the No. 3 doubles match as they topped Shakhnaza Zhanatova and Maryke Badenhorst by the score of 6-3.
The Mavericks then rallied to win five of the six singles matches to claim the 5-2 dual victory. Senior
Erin Streeter bested Zhanatova 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match, while sophomore
Camila Ojeda tallied a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lavanya Singh in the No. 4 singles match. Freshman
Lauren Goth added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chelsea Scott in the No. 6 singles match as well.
Junior
Monika Ryan won the No. 2 singles match vs. Badenhorst in three sets by the scores of 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 as well, while Bresnahan posted a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) win over Lara Peco.
Minnesota State continues its season on Sunday as it takes on Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn. The dual is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
