Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth tied 5-5 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday at Verizon Center.
 
The five goals scored were the most by the Mavericks this season, but ultimately tied in a back and forth game with the Bulldogs.
 
Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth both struck with a power play goal in the first period as MSU led in shots on goal 15-6 by the end. UMD scored first at the 11:30 mark on their second power play of the period with freshman blueliner Maggie Flaherty hit the top right corner pipe from above the left face-off circle. The Maverick answered at the 16:08 mark on their second power play attempt with sophomore forward Brittyn Fleming scoring. Fleming skated in to the left dot and beat junior netminder Maddie Rooney to the low left corner for her ninth goal of the season.
 
Minnesota Duluth went up 3-1 after goals at the 11:53 and 12:58 mark. Flaherty scored her second power play goal of the game after MSU tried to clear and she went top shelf, just across the blue line. Freshman forward Gabby Hughes then beat freshman netminder Abigail Levy to her glove side from inside the right dot after a turnover. The Mavericks got one back at the 15:10 mark as junior forward Sofia Poinar tipped in a shot from junior blueliner McKenzie Sederberg. Poinar has now scored in two straight games for Minnesota State. Senior winger Rebekah Kolstad scored for the second straight game as well at the 16:07 mark. Kolstad's tenth goal of the season came on a rebound attempt on the back side after Rooney stopped the first two shots.
 
Three goals were scored in the first four minutes of the third period, two by UMD and one by MSU. Sophomore winger Anna Klein fired glove side against Levy after the initial save trickled out of her reach, in the middle of the ice to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. Junior winger Emily Antony tied the game back up 4-4, scoring her second goal of the season. Fleming found Antony streaking down the middle of the ice and went top shelf on Rooney. Junior blueliner Jayln Elmes took the lead back for the Bulldogs as she scored from the blue line after a face-off win by the Mavericks. At the 7:14 mark, MSU tied the game up once again as freshman blueliner Anna Wilgren scored on the power play. Rooney was screened as Wilgren drove down the middle and scored on the right side for her fourth goal of the season.
 
The third period ended in a tie and the game went to overtime. Both teams had two shots on net in the extra period, but neither team was able to score. The game then went to a shootout and lasted nine rounds. Senior forward Corbin Boyd scored in the seventh round to extend the shootout before UMD won in the ninth round.
 
Freshman Abigail Levy saved 22 shots and her record moves to 9-16-6 on the season. MSU outshot UMD 35-27 and each team went two-for-three on power play opportunities.

Antony and Fleming ended the night with a goal and an assist each, while Boyd and freshman winger Brooke Bryant collected two assists. Flaherty had three points for UMD with two goals and an assist.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 3:07 p.m., for the final game of the regular season. Minnesota State needs one point to be able to jump to the sixth spot in the WCHA standings. The seven seniors on the team will be honored pregame before the national anthem.
