MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State hosted the Minnesota Whitecaps in a women's hockey exhibition game played in Mankato, Saturday afternoon and the visiting Whitecaps came away with a 3-0 win.
Winger
Allie Thunstrom got things rolling for the Whitecaps when she collected a shot from
Emma Stauber that had bounced off a leg before sliding the puck with a shot from the high slot past senior netminder
Katie Bidulka at 5:07 of the first period.
It became a 2-0 Whitecaps lead at 3:58 of the second when
Jonna Curtis buried a shot from the top of the left circle. At 18:49,
Lee Stecklein fired a wrister from 35 feet out that made its way to the back of the net and at the end of 40 minutes, the Whitecaps held a 3-0 advantage.
The two teams battled through a scoreless third period to close out the game.
Minnesota State netminders
Katie Bidulka and
Chloe Crosby combined to make 31 stops in the contest, while the Mavericks put 17 shots on the Whitecaps' two netminders
Amanda Leveille and
Julie Friend.
The Mavericks (9-12-5, 3-11-3-2 WCHA) resume action Tuesday with conference games at St. Cloud State (Tuesday) and Wisconsin (Saturday and Sunday).
