Minneapolis, Minn. --- Minnesota State falls in overtime to #1 Minnesota 3-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday at Ridder Arena.
Â
Minnesota State held a 2-1 lead until halfway through the third period, then gave up goals in the third period and overtime to Minnesota.
Â
The Mavericks came out with more energy and possession of the puck than what was shown on Friday. Each team scored a goal in the first period with Minnesota striking first at the 3:24 mark. Sophomore forward
Taylor Wente carried the puck below the red line and found senior winger
Nicole Schammel cutting to the net, going top shelf. Minnesota State answered at the 16:23 mark with a power play goal. Freshman winger
Brooke Bryant skated with the puck towards the right face-off circle and then passed across the ice to the open senior winger
Rebekah Kolstad. Her team leading ninth goal was a one timer that went top shelf past junior netminder
Sydney Scobee.
Â
The Mavericks were able to take a 2-1 lead in the second period as Bryant also scored her ninth goal of the season. After a forced turnover in the neutral zone, Bryant carried the puck just across the blue line and fired a wrister. Her shot was partially blocked by a Gopher defender and went through the legs of Scobee for the goal. After only 11 shots on goal on Friday, MSU had 19 through two periods on Saturday.
Â
Minnesota State held the 2-1 lead until just over halfway into the third period. Freshman netminderÂ
Abigail Levy made a couple of saves and on the last one she ended up on the ice, leaving the net open for junior winger
Sarah Potomak to score. The 2-2 tie held firm until the end of the third period forcing overtime. It only took 1:27 for Minnesota to score in overtime as Wente scored on a rebound right in front of the net.
Â
Freshman
Abigail Levy ended the night with 39 saves and now has a record of 9-16-5 on the season. The Mavericks went one-for-three on the power play and killed both penalties on the night. The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 42-24.Â
