Mavericks Unable to Keep Pace with #2 Badgers, Falling 4-1

MADISON, Wis. --- Minnesota State was defeated by #2 Wisconsin 4-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Sunday at LaBahn Arena.
 
For the second straight day, the Badgers had a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Freshman winger Sophie Shirley rushed the net, plowing over freshman netminder Abigail Levy. After review, it was determined the puck crossed the red line to give UW a 1-0 lead 1:15 into the game. The second goal came late in the period with 2:15 remaining as the puck got lost in a scrum in front of the net. Junior winger Alexis Mauermann poked the puck into the net to extend the lead. Levy finished with 15 saves in the period.
 
One goal was scored by Wisconsin in the second period by Shirley as senior winger Sam Cogan found her at the backside of the net 1:26 into the period. The Mavericks killed of two penalties in the period and Levy added another 14 saves.
 
Both teams added a goal in the third period and the Badgers came first at the 7:26 mark on a power play. Freshman forward Britta Curl went top shelf right in front of the crease after the initial save by Levy. Less than a minute later, the Mavericks scored their only goal of the game from senior forward Corbin Boyd. A forced turnover in MSU's offensive zone lead to Boyd's eighth goal of the season after her shot glanced off junior netminder Kristen Campbell and trickled over the line.
 
Freshman Abigail Levy finished with 38 saves and now has a 9-14-5 record. Minnesota State was outshot by Wisconsin 42-12. The Mavericks went zero-for-two on the power play and the Badgers went one-for-four.
 
Minnesota State (9-15-5, 3-14-3-2 WCHA) will make its final road trip of the regular season up to #1 Minnesota in a Friday and Saturday series next weekend. Games will begin at 7:07 p.m., and 4:07 p.m., respectively.
