Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

#1 Mavericks Whitewash Lakers Saturday

Mankato, Minn. --- Sophomore netminder Dryden McKay stopped everything thrown his way in helping lead #1 Minnesota State to a 2-0 win over Lake Superior State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Mankato Saturday night.

The host Mavericks scored a goal in the second period and added another in the third in extending their winning streak to nine games with tonight's win.

The Mavericks outshot the Lakers by a 12-7 margin in the opening stanza, but the game stood tied 0-0 after the first 20 minutes of action.

Senior captain Marc Michaelis took a drop pass from Jared Spooner 7:47 and snapped a shot past Marek Mitens on the glove side for a shorthanded marker at 7:47 of the second period to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The goal, the eighth of the year for Michaelis, is the ninth shorthanded goal for his career (ties him for first all-time with Bryce Gervais, who played with the Mavericks 2012-16).

Coming in off the left circle, junior center Jake Jaremko beat Mitens low on the stickside in tallying his fifth goal of the year at 17:17 of the third period to seal the win.

McKay, who finished with 21 saves in the game, now stands 13-1-1 for the season. Tonight's shutout is his fourth this year and the eighth of his career.

The Mavericks, now 14-1-1 overall shots and 9-1-0 WCHA, outshot the visiting Lakers by a 34-21 margin in the contest.

Minnesota State closes out the pre-Holiday portion of its scheduled with two WCHA contests at Northern Michigan next Friday and Saturday.
