#3 Minnesota State Edges Michigan Tech 2-1 Saturday

Houghton, Mich.  ---  Combined with Friday's 3-0 win, #3 Minnesota State closed out a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association road sweep with a 2-1 win at Michigan Tech Saturday.

The first scoring in the contest came when Minnesota State senior forward Charlie Gerard netted his sixth goal in the last six games when he took a pass from Marc Michaelis and toe-dragged the puck before lifting it past MTU goaltender Blake Pietila at 4:55 of the opening period.  Gerard's goal gave the visiting Mavericks a 1-0 lead after the opening period of play.

A wrist shot from the left hash mark by Tech defenseman Seamus O'Donohue that beat Dryden McKay high on the glove side at 3:04 of the second period evened the score, but when Parker Tuomie scored his third goal of the year at 16:57 when he put the puck into the net after getting his own rebound, the Mavericks entered the locker room owning a 2-1 lead at the end of the forty minutes of action.

The Mavericks held the Huskies to three shots on goal in the third period, while putting six on net themselves, but neither team was able to score in the final stanza as Minnesota State closed out the 2-1 road win.

Sophomore netminder Dryden McKay, who turned aside 17 shots, now stands 7-1-1 for 2019-20 with tonight's victory.

Now 8-1-1 overall on the year and 5-1-0 in WCHA contests, the Mavericks went zero-for-two in power play chances in the game. Tech was also zero-for-two in power plays on the night.

Minnesota State is off next weekend prior to hosting Alaska Anchorage Nov. 22 and 23 in its next action.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
