SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- It proved to be a record setting day for senior
Nate Gunn as #4 Minnesota State defeated Sioux Falls 42-39 to stay undefeated.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 10-0 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 7-3. MSU has now won 34 consecutive NSIC games. The Mavericks have now won the NSIC Championship outright.
Minnesota State scored six touchdowns against the Cougars and all six of those touchdowns came courtesy of Gunn, who set an MSU single-game record. His 254 rushing yards were also the second-most in a game in his career.
As a team, MSU tallied 488 yards of total offense, including 322 rushing yards. USF managed 371 yards of offense, with 263 coming through the air. The Mavericks also went 8-of-13 on third down, while the Cougars converted on 7-of-14 third down attempts.
Senior
Ryan Schlichte also rushed for 41 yards and completed 10 passes for 156 yards. Senior
Justin Arnold led the Maverick receiving corps with five catches for 82 yards.
Juniors
Jack Leuis and
Brayden Thomas led the Maverick defense with seven tackles each. Senior
Jordan Bergren recorded a sack as well.
The first quarter saw just a pair of scores as Minnesota State led 7-3. MSU's first drive of the game began on its own 36 and went 64 yards down field for the touchdown. Gunn ended the drive with a one yard touchdown run. USF was able to get on the board with 1:04 left in the quarter as Daniel Esparza connected on a 40-yard field goal.
As the second quarter opened, the Mavericks completed an 11-play, 73-yard touchdown drive that was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by Gunn that put MSU up 14-3 with 12:07 left in the half.
USF was then able to score a pair of touchdowns to take a 17-14 lead heading into halftime, marking the first time the Mavericks have trailed in a game since the second quarter of their week two contest against Augustana. Caden Walters connected with Thuro Reisdorfer on a 22-yard touchdown pass, before scrambling for a nine-yard touchdown run.
The third quarter saw the Mavericks regain the lead as Gunn notched two more touchdown carries, this time from 11 and 32 yards out. USF's lone score of the third quarter came via a 25-yard touchdown pass from Walters to Collier Karnell as MSU carried a 28-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Both teams recorded two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter as MSU claimed the 42-39 win. Gun recorded his final two touchdowns of the game from two and 33 yards out, with the latter proving to be the game winner.
Minnesota State wraps up its regular season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 16, as it travels to Upper Iowa. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
