Winona, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (15-8, 8-7 NSIC) took to the road to face off with the Winona State Warriors (18-5, 10-5 NSIC), and lost the match 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 28-26, 25-15).
The Warriors offense was effective early in building a 6-1 lead before the Mavericks responded with an 11-7 salvo to cut the lead to two points. Winona State was able to once again go on a run, building a comfortable lead which led to them taking the set 25-20.
The second set saw the teams trade points resulting in a 19-19 tie late. A three point Warrior run allowed them to hold off another late surge from the Mavericks which let them take the set 25-22 and take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, both teams once again played evenly en-route to a 20-20 score. Winona State was able to build a 24-23 lead but a service error allowed Minnesota State the opportunity to stay alive. With the set tied at 26-26, the Maverick defense forced back to back service errors, one deep and one off the right side, to take the set 28-26 and cut the Warrior lead to 2-1.
The fourth set started with an offensive onslaught from the Warriors who quickly built a 12-6 lead over the Mavericks. Despite a late push from Minnesota State, Winona State rallied off the last three points, taking the set 25-15 to win the match 3-1.
Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with 19 kills while
Alivia Garbe added 10 of her own.
Mara Quam recorded 26 digs in the match while
Ashton Lee blocked six shots.
Monday night, the Mavericks will host the #22 Upper Iowa Peacocks with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The match will be the second this season between the teams, with Minnesota State winning the first meeting 3-1.
