Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (15-9, 8-8 NSIC) hosted the #22 Upper Iowa Peacocks (17-7, 9-7 NSIC) on Monday night, and lost 3-0 in the match (25-21, 25-22, 25-21)
The Mavericks took the match's first timeout after trailing the Peacocks 6-3 early. Shortly after, Minnesota State rallied to a 10-8 lead and forced the Upper Iowa to use their first timeout. After the Peacocks evened the score back at 12, the first set was neck and neck to the finish. The Mavericks ultimately dropped the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Minnesota State trailed 5-1 in the early minutes. They rallied back to a two-point deficit before calling for their first timeout of the second set, trailing 10-6. After a 3-0 run out of the break, the Mavericks surrendered four consecutive points and took their final timeout trailing the Peacocks 14-9. Minnesota State came within one before dropping the final two points in a 25-22 decision of the second set.
The third set was all Mavericks from the start. They got out to an early 5-1 lead before the Peacocks evened the score. Upper Iowa surged back to even the score at 15 behind a 9-2 run. The rest of the set went back and forth with the Peacocks prevailing in the final set 25-21 to take the match in a 3-0 final.
Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with 17 kills while Alivia Garbe tallied eight kills. Mara Quam notched 21 digs on the night and Minnesota State, as a team, recorded six blocks.
The Mavericks head to St. Cloud, Minn., Friday to take on the Huskies at 6:00 p.m., before taking on Minnesota Duluth in a match slated for 2:00 p.m. , Saturday in Duluth.
