MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State women's basketball team (1-1) dropped an 80-75 nonconference game with Michigan Tech, (2-3) Monday night at Taylor Center.
The teams traded baskets early on with Minnesota State trailing 22-16 with 2:34 left in the first quarter. A three-pointer from
Tayla Stuttley made it a 22-19 game after one quarter of play. In total, Minnesota State shot 8-of-18 in the opening quarter, while Michigan Tech shot 8-of-17, including 6-of-12 from three-point range.
A 10-0 run from Michigan Tech in the second quarter saw the Huskies pull away with a 44-24 lead at the halftime break. The Mavericks were outscored 22-5 in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Minnesota State outscored Michigan Tech 23-12 thanks to a defensive change to zone and
Rachel Shumski's inside presence on offense, to draw within single digits at 56-47. The Mavericks shot 9-of-22 in the quarter and held the Huskies to just 4-of-13.
The Mavericks drew within a single point at 63-62 with 4:30 to go in the game, but the Huskies made a couple of tightly contested threes to take a five point advantage. Michigan Tech proved capable of hitting their free throw attempts late in game, and were able to ice the contest, making all 10 of their opportunities from the charity stripe, and came away with the 80-75 win.
Stuttley led the Mavericks in scoring with 19 points while
Shumski finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Kirstin Klitzke and
Kristi Fett both scored in double figures, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Mavericks next matchup is with Bethany Lutheran on Monday, Nov. 22, at Taylor Center. Tip time is set for 6:00 p.m.
