Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (17-10, 10-9 NSIC) returned home and took on the Bemidji State Beavers (7-20, 4-15 NSIC), and swept the match in convincing fashion (25-15, 25-16, 25-15).
The Mavericks wasted no time building a 6-2 lead in the first set, relying on the attack of
Morgan Olson to great success. After the Beavers tied the set at 8-8, Minnesota State rolled off a 7-0 run to take a commanding lead, ultimately taking the set 25-15.
In the second set, Bemidji State kept things close before the Mavericks broke out with an 8-3 run that put the set out of play, and cruised to a 25-16 win, and a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set proved to be much of the same as a 5-1 start for Minnesota State set the tone. While holding a 9-4 lead, the Mavericks rattled off a 7-0 run, highlighted by some excellent serving from
Mara Quam which resulted in a pair of aces. Ultimately, Minnesota State finished things off, taking the set 25-15 and securing the sweep.
Olson led all players with 13 kills on only 26 attempts, while
Ashton Lee and
Jessica Nelson finished with nine and eight kills respectively.
Dana Schindler recorded 36 assists for the Mavericks while
Quam finished with 19 digs.
Tomorrow, the Mavericks and Golden Eagles will square off at 2:00 p.m. to wrap up the 2019 regular season. There will be senior day festivities after the match.
