#2 Minnesota State Drops First Game of Season to #18 Bowling Green 3-2 in Overtime

Mankato, Minn. --- #2 Minnesota State dropped its first game of the season Friday with #18 Bowling Green handing the host Mavericks a 3-2 in overtime loss.

This is the first loss of the season for the Mavericks (5-1-1) and the first loss at home since Jan. 19 of last season when Lake Superior State beat Minnesota State 1-0.

The Mavericks scored the first goal of the game, capitalizing on a man advantage situation when senior winger Charlie Gerard received the puck at the left face-off circle from senior linemate Parker Toumie and went top shelf on netminder Eric Dop for his fourth goal of the season. It became a 2-0 Minnesota State lead after junior blueliner Connor Mackey fed junior winger Reggie Lutz from behind the net and Lutz's backhanded backhander to Dop's stick side found the back of the net at the 8:37 mark for this third goal of the year. The visiting Falcons cut the lead in half at the 17:25 mark when senior defenseman Alec Rauhauser fired a shot that screened Dryden McKay and bounced in off the pipe.

Bowling Green evened the score 5:02 into the second period as junior winger Cameron Wright tipped in the puck right outside the crease. The score remained 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

Neither team was able to score in the third period, sending the game into overtime. The Mavericks were called for a tripping penalty to stop a breakaway opportunity and Bowling Green was able to convert on the power play as junior forward Connor Ford was found open on the backside and put the puck in the back of the net for the win.

Sophomore Dryden McKay (4-1-1), fwho had 30 saves, took his first loss of the year. Shots were even at 33 a piece between the Mavericks and the Falcons with Minnesota State scorrf on one of five power play opportunities and BGSU going one-for-six with the man advantage.

The two teams close of the two-game WCHA series Saturday with a 6:07 p.m. faceoff scheduled.
