Bismark, N.D. --- No. 4 Minnesota State drops its second straight match as U-Mary won 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Mavericks record to 6-2-0 (3-2-0 NSIC) and this is the first loss to the Marauders in the 15 matches played between the two teams. U-Mary improves its record to 4-1-1 (2-1-1 NSIC) after the win.
The Marauders were the first to get on the board and scored the only goal of the first half. In the 36th minute, junior Hannah Richter got the ball on a good run and made it past two Maverick defenders before beating senior Alexa Rabune to the right goal post. U-Mary outshot Minnesota State 5-2 in the first half and the Mavericks took the only corner kick through the first 45 minutes.
Richter struck again in the second half to give U-Mary a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute. Richter picked up a loose ball in the Maverick box and beat freshman Mackenzie Rath underneath the crossbar. The Mavericks could not string anything together until just under a minute left when senior Bri Ciaccio scored her first goal of the season. Ciaccio put the ball in the low left corner off the free kick from junior Molly Sarafolean.
Rabune (6-2-0) allowed a goal and made two stops before leaving the match in the 40th minute. Rath replaced Rabune and made one save, while allowing a goal. Sophomore Madisyn Waltmat (4-1-1) made eight saves in the win, while allowing one goal for the Marauders.
The Mavericks outshot the Marauders by a 13-8 margin (9-5 on net) and held the advantage in the corner kick department by a count of 7-0 in the loss.
Minnesota State will finish its road trip against Minot State in Minot, N.D., at 12:00 p.m on Sunday.
