#4 Minnesota State Upends Minot State, 5-2

Minot, N.D. --- No. 4 Minnesota State got back to its winning ways after a 5-2 win over Minot State on Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Mavericks record to 7-2-0 (4-2-0 NSIC) and snaps a two-match losing streak. After the loss, the Beaver's record drops to 1-8-0 (1-5-0 NSIC).

The Mavericks scored four of the five goals in the first half to start off on a fast pace against the Beavers. A penalty kick was awarded to the Mavericks after the Beaver sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Long committed a foul in the box in the fourth minute of play. Sophomore Brynn Desens stepped up and buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season for the first goal of the match. Senior Bri Ciaccio extended the lead to 2-0 after scoring her second goal of the weekend and the season in the low right corner. The Beavers cut the lead in half after senior Daniela Fonseca beat freshman goalkeeper Makenzie Rath to the low right corner. The Mavericks regained the two-goal advantage in the 19th minute when sophomore Nadia Lowery scored her second goal of the season. Sophomore Jenny Vetter scored the final goal of the half in the 26th minute for her fifth goal of the season.

The Beavers and the Mavericks each scored a goal in the second half before the final horn sounded. Freshman Kelsey Pena made the score 4-2 in the 60th minute after going to the low left corner against Rath. The Mavericks scored the final goal of the match in the 76th minute when Molly Riley scored her first goal of the season past Long.

Rath (1-0-0) records her first career win after making six saves and allowing two goals. Long (0-1-0) made eight saves in the loss, while allowing five goals for the Beavers.

The Mavericks outshot the Beavers by a 22-15 margin (13-8 on net) and held the advantage in the corner kick department by a count of 5-2 in the win.

Minnesota State will begin a four-match homestand next weekend with matches against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls on. MSU will play SMSU on Oct. 11 at 3:00 p.m., and then USF on Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m., with both matches being at The Pitch.
