St. Cloud, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team completed the road sweep over St. Cloud State with a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.
The Mavericks record improved their record to 4-4-2 (2-4-2-2 WCHA) after sweeping an opponent on the road for the second time this season. This is the first sweep against a WCHA opponent since Feb. 15-16, 2014 when the Mavericks swept then-No. 4 North Dakota 4-2 and 2-1. 4-4-2 is also the best 10 game start for MSU since the 2012-13 squad also went 4-4-2.
Teams exchanged goals in the first period to take the 1-1 tie into the first intermission. St. Cloud State scored first after sophomore forward
Jenniina Nylund gathered her initial shot that was blocked and beat sophomore netminder
Calla Frank to the far post. Minnesota State bounced back after junior forward
Mariah Gardner forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone, then fed junior blueliner
Tristen Truax on the back side. Truax's second goal of the season tucked inside the right post, past junior netminder
Emma Polusny's glove side.
The Mavericks score two in the middle stanza to hold a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Sophomore blueliner
Anna Wilgren forced a turnover in the neutral zone and finished top shelf for the unassisted breakaway goal at the 8:03 mark for her first goal of the season. The second goal of the period also came off a Huskies' turnover as sophomore winger
Brooke Bryant made a cross-ice pass to junior winger
Mallorie Iozzo to beat Polusny to her stick side. Iozzo's first goal of the season was also her first goal as a Maverick after transferring from Minnesota Duluth.
Minnesota State scored the final goal in the last period at the 7:32 mark with a man advantage. Truax scored her second goal of the game and third of the season from the right face-off circle going top shelf. Senior captain
