Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (14-6, 7-5 NSIC) hosted the #3 ranked Northern State Wolves (18-2, 11-1 NSIC), and lost the match 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 12-25). The loss snaps the Mavericks five-match win streak.
The first set started all Wolves as Northern State built an early 7-2 lead, but the Mavericks responded, a staple of the Minnesota State performance all evening, with a 6-3 run. Despite a late 5-1 run from the Mavericks, the Wolves managed to hold on for a 25-20 set win to take a 1-0 match lead.
Northern State managed to once again build an early 7-3 lead in the second set but once again, Minnesota State managed to once again keep things tight by feeding senior
Morgan Olson. The teams traded points down the stretch before the Wolves managed a kill with a 24-23 edge to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks completely flipped the script in the third set, not letting the Wolves pull ahead, and after keeping things tight in the early going, Minnesota State powered ahead with an 8-3 run. Northern State once again managed to fight back into the set before the Mavericks rallied off four straight points to win the third set 25-20, cutting the Wolves lead to 2-1 for the match.
In the fourth set Northern State pulled away with 13-4 run that proved too much for Minnesota State to overcome. The Wolves managed to take the set 25-12, winning the match 3-1.
Olson finished the match with a team leading 20 kills and
Dana Schindler recorded a team high 38 assists.
Tomorrow afternoon, the Mavericks will host the MSU Moorhead Dragons with first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
