Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (15-6, 8-5 NSIC) hosted the MSU Moorhead Dragons (8-13, 3-10 NSIC) Saturday afternoon, and won the match 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 25-21).
In the first set the Mavericks started a trend that would continue throughout the match, building an early 15-11 lead behind a balanced attack from
Morgan Olson and
Anissa Janzig. The Dragons weren't able to cut into the Minnesota State lead which resulted in the Mavericks taking the first set 25-18.
MSU Moorhead got the early jump in the second set, taking an 11-8 lead before Minnesota State responded with a crushing 10-1 run that allowed the Mavericks to cruise to a 25-18 win, and a 2-0 match lead. In the third set things were completely even at 10-10 before another run, this time 6-1, allowed Minnesota State to once again take the advantage. Despite a late push from the Dragons, the deficit was too much to overcome, and the Mavericks took the third set 25-21 to complete the sweep.
Olson finished the match with 19 kills while
Janzig,
Haley Shimon and
Ashton Lee all finished with 8 kills of their own.
Dana Schindler finished the match with 43 assists and 10 digs while adding four kills of her own. As a team, the Mavericks attacked at a .396 rate compared to .214 from the Dragons
Next week, the Mavericks will host Concordia-St. Paul Thursday, Halloween night, with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Minnesota State will travel to Winona, Minn., to take on the Warriors at 2:00 p.m., before returning home Monday night to face off with Upper Iowa at 6:00 p.m.
