Fayette, Iowa --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (12-5, 5-4 NSIC) took to the road to face off with the #19 Upper Iowa Peacocks (12-5, 4-5 NSIC), and won the match 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18). The win is the third straight for the Mavericks, and the third win in a row over AVCA top 25 teams.
The first set saw the Peacocks jump out to an early three-point lead before the Mavericks rallied with a pair of 3-0 runs, highlighted by four service aces, to take a 16-13 lead, forcing Upper Iowa to use their first timeout. The Peacocks rallied late in the set but ultimately the Mavericks shut them down and took the first set 25-22.
After starting the second set evenly matched, the Mavericks managed to craft a 15-11 lead after a pair of power kills from
Morgan Olson. Upper Iowa couldn't crack the defense of Minnesota State, who ended up winning the second set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Peacocks were able to take advantage of a strong serve game and managed to break away at the end to take the set 25-18, cutting the Maverick lead to 2-1 for the match.
The fourth set saw the Mavericks open things up with a 9-3 run and the Peacocks never recovered as Minnesota State ran away with a 25-18 win to close the match.
Olson finished with a match leading 19 kills on only 30 attempts.
Dana Schindler led the way with 46 assists while adding 11 digs. As a team, the Mavericks recorded nine service aces with four of them coming from
Jessica Nelson.
This weekend, the Mavericks will travel to North Dakota for a Friday match vs. the University of Mary with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m., before facing off with Minot State Saturday at noon.
