Minnesota State Garners Shutout Win over Sioux Falls

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State soccer team completed the weekend sweep with a 5-0 shutout win over Sioux Falls in the teams breast cancer awareness match, Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.

A big day by sophomore Jenny Vetter helped improve the Mavericks record to 9-2-0 (6-2-0 NSIC) after scoring two goals and collecting career-high three assists for a career-high seven points.

The Mavericks got on the board first when Vetter stole the ball and took it upon herself to go down the field and score her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 27th minute. Minnesota State then added another goal in the 37th minute when freshman Allie Williams scored with a shot off her right foot to the upper left corner. The Mavericks would score their third goal of the half when Vetter scored her second goal of the match and ninth of the season in the 39th minute after gathering the long pass from Williams and slipping it by the Cougar goalkeeper who came off her line.

Minnesota State scored two more times in the second half to further extend its lead. The Mavericks got on the board again within the first minute of the second half when sophomore Nadia Lowery bent the shot from the top of the box to the upper left corner. A goal from sophomore Brynn Desens in the 57th minute pushed the Maverick lead to 5-0 on a little chip in goal right next to the net.

Senior goalkeeper Alexa Rabune (8-1-0) earned the win while making two saves and freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Rath also saw action, securing one save in the combined shutout.

Minnesota State finished with a 16-8 shots advantage and a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 6-1 advantage in corners. Vetter led the team with two goals and three assists in the contest, while Williams also had a multi-point match with a goal and an assist.

The Mavericks will finish their four-match homestand against Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Bemidji State on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 1:00 p.m., at The Pitch.
