MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- Minnesota State allowed a late goal to St. Cloud State and ended up tying 2-2 in the first game of the Minnesota Cup at Ridder Arena on Saturday.

The two teams fought through a scoreless overtime with no goals being scored and SCSU claimed the shootout victory by a 1-0 margin.

The Mavericks came out aggressive in the first period, outshooting the Huskies 11-7, but it was SCSU who struck first. At the 17:10 mark, freshman forward
Jenniina Nylund lost the Mavericks defender and put one under the pads of freshman netminder
Abigail Levy to take the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Senior winger
Rebekah Kolstad got Minnesota State on the board when she scored her sixth goal of the season at the 7:42 mark in the second period. Senior forward
Corbin Boyd won a face-off in the offensive zone and senior blueliner
Megan Hinze passed the puck towards the middle of the ice as Kolstad put it through the legs of the Huskies' goaltender
Emma Polusny. The Mavericks then took the 2-1 lead with virtually no time left on the clock with Boyd scoring her sixth of the season. As time was winding down, Boyd took a shot below the red line that hit off of a SCSU skater and Polusny's skate that ended up in the back of the net.

Minnesota State took the 2-1 into the third period and was close to victory when St. Cloud State pulled its goaltender and scored with an extra skater on the ice with
Abby Thiessen scoring the goal. The game went into overtime and ended in a tie as both teams were not able to score in the extra frame.

During the shootout, the Mavericks went zero-for-three and the Huskies went one-for-three giving them the shootout win. Nylund converted for SCSU.

Minnesota State's goaltender
Abigail Levy collected 23 saves during the game and now has a record of 8-7-4 on the season.

The Mavericks outshot the Huskies by a big margin of 41-25 and both teams went zero-for-one on the power play.

Minnesota State (8-7-4, 3-7-2-1 WCHA) will await the loser between Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth for the third place game of the Minnesota Cup at a time to be determined.
