Mavericks Rally Late to Top Minot State in Overtime

MINOT, N.D. --- It came down to overtime for the third straight game against Minot State Friday evening, but it was Minnesota State that was able to come away with the 82-76 win on the road.

With the win, MSU improves to 10-3 on the season, including a 6-1 NSIC record. With the loss, MISU drops to 6-10, including a 1-6 conference record. The Mavericks have now won seven of their last eight games, including their last three. This is also the fourth time this season that the Mavericks have gone to overtime.

Minot State led through the majority of the first half as it carried a 36-32 lead into the locker room. Both teams were tied at 8-8 with 15:49 to go in the half, before the Beavers began a 9-0 run to go up 17-8 with 11:43 left in the first half.

A little more than six minutes later the Mavericks erased their nine point deficit as a three pointer from senior Carlos Anderson knotted up the score at 27-27 with 5:08 to go in the half. Minot State managed to go back up by seven at 36-29, but a three pointer from junior Juwan McCloud as time expired in the first half closed the gap to 36-32. 

Junior Cameron Kirksey led the Mavericks in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds, while McCloud posted 11 points of his own. As a team, MSU shot 41.4% from the field and 83.3% from the free throw line.

David Akibo led all scorers in the first half with 13 points, while Dorian Aluyi added 12 points and six rebounds. As a team, MISU shot 51.6% from the field in the first half.

The Beavers still held the lead through the majority of the second half and even led by as many as 11 at 60-49 with 7:06 to go. The Mavericks then put together a 17-5 run over the following 6:12 to take their first lead since the opening basket of the game at 66-54 with 54 seconds remaining. Four different Mavericks scored during their 17-5 run, including Carlos Anderson and McCloud who each tallied five points.

Minot State was able to go back up by one at 67-66 after a pair of free throws from Trevor Rothstein, but McCloud was able to connect on 1-of-2 free throw attempts with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Carlos Anderson hit the first basket just 17 seconds into the overtime and the Mavericks would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way as they outscored the Beavers 15-9 in the overtime to claimed the 82-76 win. Carlos Anderson tallied seven points in overtime, while senior Karson Arrenholz notched five points.

Carlos Anderson led the Maverick offense with 20 points and eight rebounds, while McCloud posted 19 points and five assists. Kirksey added 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks before fouling out in the final minute of the second half.

As a team, MSU shot 28-of-65 (.431) from the field, to go along with an 18-of-24 (.750) performance from the free throw line.

Akibo notched a double-double as he led the Beaver offense with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Cody Max posted 20 points and seven assists, while Aluyi notched a double-double of his own with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

As a team, Minot State shot 42.5% from the field, but it only connected on 4-of-17 (.235) attempts from long range.

Minnesota State wraps up its road trip on Saturday as it takes on the University of Mary. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
