Scheid's Overtime Goal Lifts Minnesota State Past Ferris State

Big Rapids, Mich. ---   #7/8 Minnesota State scored the first two goals of the game, but had to go to overtime in claiming a 3-2 win at Ferris State in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday in Big Rapids, Mich.
Junior defenseman Ian Scheid got the game winner in the extra session as the visiting Mavericks won for the third consecutive time.

Sophomore forward Reggie Lutz tallied his second goal of the year when his shot from between the dots found the back of the net at the 12:07 mark of the opening frame to start things for the Mavericks.  Sophomore forward Jake Jaremko, who assisted on Lutz's goal, cashed in on a power play opportunity at 13:42, coming in off the left wing before firing a shot that beat Justin Kapelmaster up high for his third goal of the season.

The visiting Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs by an 11-3 margin in the middle period, but it was Ferris State that was able to get on the scoresheet, tallying an even-strength goal from Zac Tierney, whose shot from the point wound its way through a bevy of legs and sticks past Dryden McKay at the 6:04 mark.

FSU's Lucas Finner sent the game into overtime when he deflected Cooper Zech's shot from the point leaked between McKay's pads at 12:24 of the third period.

Scheid tallied his third goal of the season on a shot from the point that beat Kapelmaster at 3:03 of the extra session. The goal is his fifth career game-winning tally.

Netminder Dryden McKay, who has started 10 of the last 11 games for Minnesota State, had 17 saves in the game and now stands 10-4-1 for the season.  Lutz, Jaremko and Scheid all finished with one goal and one assist in the contest.  *****(scoring on Minnesota's State's GWG was changed postgame with Jaremko awarded the secondary assist (instead of Lutz))

The Mavericks, who were one-for-four in power play chances in the game, outshot the Bulldogs by a 41-19 margin.

With tonight's win, Minnesota State ran its record to 17-5-1 (12-3-0 WCHA) for the season.

The two teams close out the two-game league series Saturday night with a 6:07 p.m. EST face-off scheduled.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
