MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team (11-4, 7-2 NSIC) lost to the Sioux Falls Cougars (11-4, 6-3 NSIC) 74-46 Friday night at Taylor Center.
The offense for the Mavericks didn't output the scoring throughout the first half based on the quality looks they were getting. From the outset, Minnesota State had several open three-point opportunities that were not finding the bottom of the basket. The Cougars didn't fare much better in the opening minutes but were able to capitalize on several second chance opportunities, ultimately taking a 30-20 lead into the half.
In the first half the Mavericks were led in scoring by
Cameron Kirksey, who tallied eight points and three rebounds. Minnesota State led in the blocks category with a 3-1 edge in the first half, but the 23% shooting from the field made it a challenge to get the lead.
The second half proved to be much the same as whenever the Mavericks would score a couple of baskets, the Cougars would respond as well as improve their lead. Sioux Falls continued to grow their lead throughout the second half, eventually coming away with the 74-46 win.
As a team, the Mavericks shot 22.6% from the field, but did outscore the Cougars bench 20-15.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow night as they host Southwest Minnesota State, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
